Teachers

Results

The percentage of teachers in Scaling Up Best Practices networks who volunteer for SLI professional development remains strong. More than 70% of the teachers in each school will have attended the workshops and other SLI training by the end of the third year in each network.

SLI strengthens teachers with state-of-the-art training that is aligned with the priorities of Every Child, Every School-the Chicago Public Schools Education Plan, the goals of the Chicago Reading Initiative, and the standards of the Chicago Public Schools Office of Professional Development.

Teachers are learning and implementing best practices that have been validated by leading education research such as Focused Instruction, Building Background Knowledge and Differentiated Instruction strategies and tools that elicit higher order thinking, cooperative learning, and teaching for understanding.

Teachers extend and refine their teaching through discussion and feedback with colleagues in both their own schools and throughout the network. Teachers can also volunteer to be trained by SLI as workshop-facilitators and peer coaches or participate on their school's leadership team so their schools build capacity for sustaining the lessons learned from SLI.

SLI's modeling, coaching and design reinforces the methods and strategies imparted in the workshops or through focus lessons, ensuring that teachers have the support needed to implement them in their classrooms.

Teachers reflect on current lesson design and future planning by looking at student work both individually and in collaboration with other teachers, sharing and learning from the experiences of their peers.

SLI's professional development program also introduces and reinforces the strategies emphasized by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the National Staff Development Council.

Through working with SLI, teachers are able to earn CPDU credits toward their own re-certification plans and goals.
