Professional Development

SLI's Professional Development component aims to improve student achievement by helping teachers focus on standards, reflect upon and re-design their current teaching practices. Going beyond one-stop enrichment experiences, SLI provides teachers with weekly on-site Focused Instruction Process support and/or professional development workshops centered on innovative, child-centered strategies and tools that impact students.

Through our workshops and with modeling, design and coaching opportunities*, SLI supports teachers as they learn about and implement strategies encompassed in topics such as Extended Response, Building Background Knowledge, Teaching Strategies for Success, Focus Instruction and Differentiated Instruction.

Throughout the professional development services, SLI emphasizes the importance of building capacity at the school by training teachers to become peer coaches, teacher facilitators and involvement on school leadership teams. In addition, participating teachers have the opportunity to make site visits to other schools to observe best practice in action.

At SLI we value life-long learning, as a result we are pleased to be able to offer teachers Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs) through participation in SLI activities.

Modeling allows teachers to observe standards of excellence in using Best Practices for classroom instruction. A facilitator demonstrates a lesson with a teacher’s class using a strategy taught in one of the Workshops. This service allows teachers to see the strategies being used with their own students.

Design is a service which allows teachers to sit with a facilitator and create a lesson using a workshop strategy for use in the teacher’s classroom. It provides an opportunity for one on one dialogue about how a lesson should be developed and presented.

Coaching involves training and providing practice in giving feedback following a lesson observation. This non evaluative service leads to improved instruction, increases collaboration and encourages reflective thinking about teaching strategies.
